Bernard Riley was raised in a Catholic family and maintained that faith throughout his life. He created a series of Life of the Saints works, small single portraits many done with gold leaf background. The urge to paint on a grand scale was fulfilled in 1959 when he designed a detailed narrative mural recording the life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga for Fairfield University.
